Nearly 12,000 taxpayers are about to receive penalty notices from HM Revenue & Customs in error.
These letters warn the recipients that they will face £10 per day fines starting next Tuesday for not filing their tax return despite the taxpayer having been told they no longer need to fill in self-assessment tax forms. The taxpayers affected have originally been told that they could settle their bill through the PAYE system
Approximately 130,000 taxpayers were taken out of the self-assessment process when HMRC's updated their records. However, 12,000 of them have received the penalty notice by mistake.
In 2011 HMRC were hit by a huge amount of negative publicity from employers across the UK in respect of their treatment of penalities where late P35's were filed. Indeed they were accused of actively profiteering.
The rate at which P35 penalities apply is £100 per 50 employees for every month that your return is late and this remains the same for the 2011/12 tax year.
